Twitter Compliance in Maltego Monitor (previously PublicSonar)

Twitter does not allow public organisations to conduct surveillance on individuals or groups, or search on topics that are politically sensitive, such as demonstrations, extremism and activism.

PublicSonar keeps track of forbidden search terms. These search terms are not included in the search on Twitter. In other sources these search terms are still included in the search. The list of search terms that cannot be searched for on Twitter (blacklist) is created and maintained by PublicSonar and can change over time.

How can I see which terms could not be searched for on Twitter?

You can recognize a search with search restrictions by an information icon behind that search. Click on this icon to see the words that cannot be searched for on Twitter. You do search for these words on other sources.

As soon as you click on the information icon behind a search, a modal opens with a list of the terms that cannot be searched for on Twitter. You do search for these terms on other sources.

Why do I see a term with a * ?

To prevent variations on a term, the Maltego Monitor blacklist uses so called 'wildcards'. They can be recognized by the use of a *. The word protest* makes sure that all variations on the term protest (protestants, protests, protested, etc) are not send in the search query to Twitter.

Why can't I search these terms on Twitter?

You cannot search on terms that are related to prepossession, activism, extremism or discrimination.

Prepossession

Monitoring an individual or a group based on a potential increased risk, without this having to apply to the entire group. This also applies to words that can be linked to certain groups. For example motorcycle clubs (Hells Angels, etc) or ethnicities (Kurds, etc), indications for criminals (hooligans, etc.) and drugs (xtc, etc).

Activism

Extra-parliamentary activities with the aim of forcing change. This applies to both the groups themselves and expressions related to these groups. For example activism (Black Lives Matter, etc) and anti-monarchy (fucktheking, etc).

Extremism

Ideological activities that are distant from the political center and deviate from the center of society. This applies to both the groups themselves and expressions related to these groups. For example the extreme and far left (Antifa, etc) and the extreme and far right (Blood & Honour, etc).

Discrimination

Making a distinction between individuals or groups based on race, skin color, ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, belief and biased risk (Muslims, etc).
